Dental composite materials for direct restorations / by V. Miletic
SpringerLink

This book covers both basic scientific and clinically relevant aspects of dental composite materials with a view to meeting the needs of researchers and practitioners. Following an introduction on their development, the composition of contemporary composites is analyzed. A chapter on polymerization explains the setting reactions and light sources available for light-cured composites. The quality of monomer-to-polymer conversion is a key factor for material properties. Polymerization shrinkage along with the associated stress remains among the most challenging issues regarding composite restorations. A new classification of dental composites is proposed to offer more clinically relevant ways of differentiating between commercially available materials. A review of specific types of composites provides an insight into their key issues. The potential biological issues of dental composites are reviewed in chapters on elution of leachable substances and cariogenicity of resin monomers. Clinical sections focus on material placement, finishing procedures, and the esthetics and clinical longevity of composite restorations. Bonding to tooth tissues is addressed in a separate chapter, as is the efficiency of various composite repair methods. The final chapter discusses future perspectives on dental composite materials. Temporomandibular disorders: a translational approach from basic science to clinical applicability / by
H. A. Gremillion and G. D. Klasser
SpringerLink

This book acquaints the reader with the basic science principles needed in order to understand temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) with a view to helping practitioners manage individuals with TMDs in accordance with the tenets of evidence-based dental medicine. The opening chapters provide essential information on the embryology, anatomy, and physiology of the masticatory system, which includes both myogenous and arthrogenous anatomic structures. Using this knowledge as a foundation, the reader will be better prepared to grasp the function and, ultimately, the dysfunction of masticatory muscles and the temporomandibular joint, both of which are addressed in detail. The book’s final section is exclusively devoted to management principles and includes a chapter on psychosocial considerations. By following a translational approach to evidence-based practice measures, as outlined in this book, the clinician will be excellently positioned to choose appropriate interventions on a case-specific basis. Management of fractured endodontic instruments: a clinical guide / by T. Lambrianidis
SpringerLink

This superbly illustrated book provides detailed information on the causes of instrument failure during endodontic treatment, the factors influencing the management of such cases, and the diverse management options that may be employed to resolve the problem. Readers will find clear descriptions and comparative evaluation of the available methods, techniques, and devices. Complications that may arise during the management of fractured instruments are described, and the impact of retained file fragments on the prognosis of endodontic treatment is discussed. In addition, means of preventing iatrogenic errors from occurring in the first place (the best form of management) are explained, emphasizing that the risk of instrument failure is reduced if proper guidelines are carefully considered and followed. The book will assist both endodontists and general dental practitioners in achieving an optimal outcome when confronted with the time-consuming and challenging task of dealing with a fractured instrument within the root canal – a still frequent circumstance despite the plethora of improvements in instrument design, alloy composition, and manufacturing processes. Pathogenesis of periodontal diseases: biological concepts for clinicians / by N. Bostanci and G. N. Belibasakis
SpringerLink

This book aims to provide clinicians with a refined understanding of the biology that underlies periodontal diseases, thereby offering a sound basis for improved clinical decision making with regard to prevention strategies, diagnosis, and therapy. All significant aspects of periodontal pathogenesis are covered, including the roles played by the oral microbiome and biofilms, bacterial virulence factors, cells of the immune system, matrix metalloproteinases, proinflammatory and osteolytic cytokines, genetic factors, and antimicrobial peptides.
Periodontal diseases are among the most common infectious diseases in humans, and the primary cause of tooth loss in adults. The functional and esthetic problems associated with these diseases compromise quality of life, and their treatment imposes large financial burdens on national health systems and private patients. Up-to-date knowledge of periodontal pathogenesis is therefore essential for the contemporary clinician. This book, written by experts from Europe and the Americas, delivers such knowledge in an accessible, clinician-friendly way. From publisher site.

Apical periodontitis in root-filled teeth: endodontic retreatment and alternative approaches / by T. Kvist
SpringerLink

This book is a comprehensive guide to apical periodontitis in root-filled teeth that covers not only all aspects of diagnosis and management but also epidemiology, etiology, consequences, clinical decision-making, and prognosis. There is a particular focus on the available surgical and nonsurgical methods of retreatment designed to restore healthy periapical conditions. Alternatives to retreatment are also explored, including a conservative approach involving monitoring of the diseased tooth without intervention and the option of extraction and replacement with an implant or a fixed prosthesis. The goal of root canal treatment is to save the natural tooth even when tissue breakdown has resulted in pathological conditions of the pulp and periradicular tissue. However, population studies reveal that complete healing is often absent in root-filled teeth, and apical periodontitis is frequently observed in conjunction with root fillings of poor technical quality. Under thesecircumstances, questions arise as to how the apical periodontitis is impacting on the patient and how the condition should be tackled. Readers will find this well-illustrated book to be of great value in directing clinical practice. From publisher site.

Minimally Invasive Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery / by O. Nahlieli
SpringerLink

Minimally invasive techniques, designed to reduce morbidity and risk while simultaneously improving outcomes, are increasingly being used in oral and maxillofacial surgery. This book covers the most recent technological developments and the advanced techniques used when performing such minimally invasive surgery in patients with common and rare oral and maxillofacial pathologies. The relevant basic science is reviewed, but the principal focus is on the surgical techniques themselves. These are described step by step with the aid of numerous superb color illustrations that will help the clinician to gain a full understanding of the technology and the procedures. In addition, still emerging techniques of endoscopy, navigation, and minimally invasive surgery are well covered. This text will be a premier resource for physicians who diagnose and treat oral and maxillofacial pathologies and injuries. From publisher site.

Common complications in endodontics: prevention and management / by P. Jain
SpringerLink

This book describes the most commonly encountered endodontic complications and provides up-to-date information on their prevention and management. The opening chapters explain the importance of accurate diagnosis and treatment planning, outline the role of digital radiography and CBCT in managing complications, and highlight the need for close attention to anatomic landmarks in order to avoid damage to neurovascular anatomy. Endodontic problems associated with different procedural errors are then discussed in detail, covering a wide variety of access- and instrumentation-related complications and the difficulties that may arise when using obturation techniques. Readers will also find information on the endodontic–periodontal relationship, special issues in geriatric patients, and the potential medical emergencies and precautions in specific patient subsets. The clear, easy-to-read text is complemented by numerous high-quality photographs and tables that assist understanding and ready identification of management solutions. This book will be of value for all dental practitioners with an interest in endodontics, endodontic specialists, and higher-level students. From publisher site.
