Respiratory Monitoring in Mechanical Ventilation / edited by Jian-Xin Zhou, Guang-Qiang Chen, Hong-Liang Li and Linlin Zhang
Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2021

“This book covers the up-to-date advancement of respiratory monitoring in ventilation support as well as detecting the physiological responses to therapeutic interventions to avoid complications. Mechanical ventilation nowadays remains the cornerstone in life saving in critically ill patients with and without respiratory failure. However, conclusive evidences show that mechanical ventilation can also cause lung damage, specifically, in terms of ventilator-induced lung injury.

Respiratory monitoring encloses a series of physiological and pathophysiological measurements, from basic gas exchange and ventilator wave forms to more sophisticated diaphragm function and lung volume assessments. The progress of respiratory monitoring has always been accompanied by advances in technology. However, how to properly conduct the procedures and correctly interpret the data requires clear definition.

The book introduces respiratory monitoring techniques and data analysis, including gas exchange, respiratory mechanics, thoracic imaging, lung volume measurement, and extra-vascular lung water measurement in the initial part. How to interpret the acquired and derived parameters and to illustrate their clinical applications is presented thoroughly. In the following part, the applications of respiratory monitoring in specific diseases and conditions is introduced, including acute respiratory distress syndrome, obstructive pulmonary diseases, patient-ventilator asynchrony, non-invasive ventilation, brain injury with increased intracranial pressure, ventilator-induced diaphragm dysfunction, and weaning from mechanical ventilation.

This book is intended primarily for ICU physicians and other practitioners including respiratory therapists, ICU nurses and trainees who come into contact with patients under mechanical ventilation. This book also provides guidance for clinical researchers who take part in respiratory and mechanical ventilation researches.” From publisher’s website

Vivas
"Training in oral and maxillofacial surgery is lengthy and demanding, requiring dual qualification and basic training in dentistry and medicine, followed by completion of a higher surgical training programme. The ‘exit examination’ leading to the awarding of the specialty Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (FRCS(OMFS)) represents the final academic step of training in the specialty. For part 2 of the FRCS(OMFS) examination, one day is dedicated to ‘vivas’, where the candidate is interviewed by two senior clinicians in their diagnosis and management of conditions in the specialty. As such it encompasses the entire remit of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, including orthognathic surgery, craniomaxillofacial trauma, surgical oncology and dermatology, oral medicine, craniofacial surgery, dentoalveolar surgery, temporomandibular joint disorders, salivary gland disease, local flap and free tissue transfer, oral implantology and cleft surgery. This daunting syllabus is covered in four viva sessions of thirty minutes, with six five-minute vivas in each session. The aim of this book is to give candidates a structure as to how to answer such scenarios as well as provide clinical subject matter encompassing the range of the specialty. This includes pertinent scenarios that are generally not covered in other FRCS revision books such as ethics, consent and negligence. As such it will be of interest to clinicians in related specialties, including dermatology, oral surgery, ENT, and plastic surgery." From publisher website

Bruxism
"Bruxism is a common parafunction, and over the last 15 years the profession has become aware of just how destructive it can be to the masticatory structures when left untreated. However, because it is still seen as a multifaceted phenomenon that is difficult to treat, many practitioners assume that it is incurable. This book answers these doubts and concerns by outlining the various etiologies and aggravating factors of bruxism, distinguishing the different types of bruxism, and demonstrating how to complete a differential diagnosis. Then, in keeping with the latest evidence, the authors promote a more conservative approach to treatment and outline which treatment strategies to use in different situations" From publisher website

"Explore a comprehensive pictorial guide to the retreatment of root canals and failed endodontic cases with step-by-step advice on retreatment management

Clinical Atlas of Retreatment in Endodontics delivers an image-based reference to the management of failed root canal cases. It provides evidence-based strategies and detailed clinical explanations to manage and retreat previous endodontically failed cases. It contains concrete evidence-based and practical techniques accompanied by full-colour, self-explanatory clinical photographs taking the reader through a journey of successful management of the failed clinical cases.

Using a variety of clinical cases, the book demonstrates why and how endodontic failures occur, how to prevent them, and how to manage them in clinical practice. It also emphasises on evaluating the restorability and prognosis of the tooth in order to make a proper case selection for providing retreatment. This book also discusses the various factors that can help the clinician to make a case for nonsurgical or surgical retreatment. Readers will benefit from the inclusion of clinical cases that provide:

  • A thorough introduction to perforation repair, with a clinical case that includes the repair of pulpal floor perforation caused due to excessive cutting of the floor of the pulp chamber
  • An explanation of various factors for instrument separation, supported with a case that includes the removal of a fractured instrument
  • Practical discussions of instrument retrieval, with a case that includes a fractured instrument at the apical third of mandibular molar
  • A step wise pictorial description for guided root canal therapy
  • Selective root canal treatment as a treatment option for retreatment of failed endodontic cases
  • A detailed clinical description for how to explore and modify the endodontic access cavity for locating extra/missed canals

Perfect for endodontists, endodontic residents, and general dentists, Clinical Atlas of Retreatment in Endodontics is also useful for undergraduate dental students and private practitioners who wish to improve their understanding of endodontic retreatment and are looking for a one-stop reference on the subject." From publisher’s website

Statistical Design and Analysis of Biological Experiments / edited by Hans-Michael Kaltenbach
Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021

“This richly illustrated book provides an overview of the design and analysis of experiments with a focus on non-clinical experiments in the life sciences, including animal research. It covers the most common aspects of experimental design such as handling multiple treatment factors and improving precision. In addition, it addresses experiments with large numbers of treatment factors and response surface methods for optimizing experimental conditions or biotechnological yields.

The book emphasizes the estimation of effect sizes and the principled use of statistical arguments in the broader scientific context. It gradually transitions from classical analysis of variance to modern linear mixed models, and provides detailed information on power analysis and sample size determination, including ‘portable power’ formulas for making quick approximate calculations. In turn, detailed discussions of several real-life examples illustrate the complexities and aberrations that can arise in practice.

Chiefly intended for students, teachers and researchers in the fields of experimental biology and biomedicine, the book is largely self-contained and starts with the necessary background on basic statistical concepts. The underlying ideas and necessary mathematics are gradually introduced in increasingly complex variants of a single example. Hasse diagrams serve as a powerful method for visualizing and comparing experimental designs and deriving appropriate models for their analysis. Manual calculations are provided for early examples, allowing the reader to follow the analyses in detail. More complex calculations rely on the statistical software R, but are easily transferable to other software.

Though there are few prerequisites for effectively using the book, previous exposure to basic statistical ideas and the software R would be advisable.” From publisher’s website
